Choose a small question

Try: How does one community invite young people to participate in music? Choose a short Chinese-language event notice and an organizer's description or interview from the same community. Check the author, date, intended audience, and whether the sources actually answer the question. Use authorized links or materials you may reproduce; do not copy commercial textbooks.

College Board identifies interpretive communication, interpersonal and presentational communication, and cultural understanding as course skills. This original classroom routine practices those areas; it is not an official exam task, scoring rubric, or substitute for the required Course Project.

A ready-to-model example

The following two invented texts are for modeling reasoning, not authentic cultural evidence.

Ask: What can these cards establish? Students can identify free entry, registration, and an exchange between age groups. They cannot establish attendance, participants' feelings, or what all Chinese-speaking communities value. Replace these practice cards with checked authentic sources before drawing real cultural conclusions.

A 40-minute sequence

  • 0–5 minutes: introduce the question. Students note one prediction and mark it as a prediction.
  • 5–13: read or listen to the two sources. Each student records two details and where each came from.
  • 13–20: partners sort notes into observation, interpretation, and unknown. Model one overgeneralization and revise it.
  • 20–28: each student gives a 45–60 second explanation. The listener chooses a genuine follow-up question; switch roles.
  • 28–35: repeat with a new partner and a different question. Students may consult brief notes but should not read a full script.
  • 35–40: collect a three-line exit ticket: claim, supporting detail with source, and one limit or unanswered question.

04

Give language support, not a script

Offer a small word bank: Let students choose only the words that express their meaning.

Remove a frame when the student no longer needs it; do not confuse successful repetition with independent proficiency.

  • Which detail supports that?
  • Could there be another explanation?
  • What would you need to check next?

05

Listen for three things

Use three separate notes: evidence accuracy, reasoning, and responsiveness. For each, mark independent, with prompting, or not yet observed. These are planning notes, not AP scores.

Example: a student says Ask whether price tells us people's preferences. A more defensible revision is Notice the reasoning improvement even if the revised Mandarin is less fluent.

For a student who interprets well but hesitates to speak, allow a brief rehearsal or key-word notes. For a fluent speaker who makes broad claims, require a source detail and a limit. Different support can serve the same intellectual goal.

06

Turn the exit ticket into tomorrow's plan

If details are inaccurate, revisit a small passage before adding a harder source. If evidence is accurate but the inference is too broad, compare two possible explanations. If the claim is sound but follow-up answers stall, rehearse clarification strategies such as 你的意思是___吗? and 我需要想一下.

Return to the routine with a different community or topic. The aim is flexible, evidence-aware communication, not a polished answer that only works once. Keep students' uncertainty visible: identifying what they cannot yet conclude is part of careful inquiry.
