Keep the communication goal visible
College Board includes interpersonal and presentational writing among AP Chinese course skills. This original routine practices interpersonal writing through a familiar planning situation. It is not an official exam prompt, scoring rubric, or claim about exam timing.
Lesson goal: reply to a partner's invitation, address the requested information, explain a choice, and ask one relevant question. A polished paragraph that ignores the sender's needs is less successful communication than a simpler reply that makes those needs clear.

This fictional email is Teacher Teahouse practice material, not a document from a real school or evidence about a Chinese-speaking culture. The task can fit a school-life or community unit. Teachers may replace the context with an authorized authentic message while preserving the communicative purpose.

Read before writing
Ask students to mark three things: who is writing, what decision needs to be made, and what information the sender requests. Build a response map: preferred time → reason; contribution → concrete task; unanswered issue → question.
Distinguish a genuine question from a decorative one. 你好吗? may be friendly but does not help plan this activity. 活动预计有多少人参加? can help the writer decide how many materials to prepare. Neither question is universally right or wrong; its usefulness depends on the situation.
先读,再写
请学生标出:谁写信、需要做什么决定、对方问了什么。建立回应表:建议时间→理由;愿意承担的工作→具体任务;尚未知道的信息→问题。
区分有用追问与装饰性问题。“你好吗?”很友好,却未必帮助筹备活动。“活动预计有多少人参加?”能帮助决定材料数量。问题没有绝对好坏,关键在于是否适合当前情境。
A 40-minute lesson
- 0–5: introduce the situation. Students tell a partner what a useful reply would accomplish.
- 5–12: read the message and build the response map. Compare interpretations before drafting.
- 12–22: write an individual reply. Require the requested information, not an arbitrary number of elaborate connectors.
- 22–28: partners read as the organizer. Underline an answered request, circle a useful reason, and mark anything still unclear.
- 28–35: revise one missing idea and one unclear expression. Students explain why their change helps the reader.
- 35–40: change one condition: the room is unavailable after school. Write two follow-up sentences proposing an adjustment and asking for clarification.
A model to examine—not memorize
小林,你好!谢谢你邀请我提建议。我觉得午休比较合适,因为放学后有些同学要参加运动队训练。我愿意负责制作海报,也可以请两位同学帮忙介绍活动。活动预计有多少人参加?知道人数后,我们可以准备合适数量的材料。如果你需要,我这周五可以先给你看海报草稿。祝好!小雨
Read the model after students draft. Ask what each sentence does for the reader. Notice that the question connects to preparation, and the offer includes a next step. Students should retain their own ideas rather than copy the model's time, job, or reason.
Differentiate support without replacing the writer
- More support: provide a planning grid and a small bank: 安排、负责、准备、预计、合适、草稿. Offer 我建议___,因为___ and 我想确认___.
- More independence: remove sentence frames but retain the response map. Ask students to make their contribution specific enough to act on.
- Extension: add a real constraint such as limited space or a schedule conflict. Ask students to propose a workable alternative without changing the core task.
- For heritage learners or students with uneven literacy, offer oral planning and a checked word bank as appropriate. Do not infer writing proficiency from spoken fluency alone.
Give feedback that leads to a next lesson
Use a short checklist: Did I answer both planning questions? Did I explain my choice? Is my proposed job specific? Does my question help the organizer? Can the reader understand the message? These are classroom feedback prompts, not AP score categories.
If students omit requests, reteach reading and planning. If replies are complete but vague, practice adding one concrete detail. If meaning is clear but wording repeatedly causes confusion, choose a brief language mini-lesson. Keep a first draft and a revision so students can name what improved; one successful email is not proof of a proficiency level.
让反馈决定下一课
简短检查表:两个筹备问题都回答了吗?说明选择理由了吗?工作安排具体吗?追问能帮助组织者吗?读者能理解吗?这些是课堂反馈提示,不是 AP 分数类别。
遗漏问题时重教阅读与规划;内容完整但模糊时练习补一个具体细节;意思清楚但反复出现影响理解的表达时,安排短小语言练习。保留初稿和修改稿,让学生指出改进;一封成功邮件不代表已经达到某个能力等级。
